A great way to tour Cape Cod is by following the main road which follows the bay, around to the northern tip of the cape, then loops around to head back south. At the very tip you will find Provincetown, a small community of a few thousand people. Nicknamed P-town by many of the locals, it is a town well known for it’s picturesque harbour, great whale watching, and a thriving artistic community, a great place to start your trip.

South of Provincetown, you will come across the town of Wellfleet, another picturesque coastal community. A highly recommended place to stop off here is the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, a lush area of the coastline which has been protected since 1896, to preserve the local wilderness. Made up of pine forests, marshes and ponds, the sanctuary features a great range of rare birdlife and other local species.

Drive your car hire further south along the cape, where after a few smaller communities you will reach the town of Brewster. This is where you will find the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. Founded in 1954, the museum was set up to help the people of the area learn about local plant and animal life. Many living displays make up the museum, which resembles a wildlife park more than a traditional museum, and there are many hands on displays to entertain the kids.
