There are a number of sites in the Historic District which stand out above the rest, and in the northern part of downtown, you cannot miss the City Markets. Starting as a small local market in the 1750s, the area has evolved over the centuries to become a bustling centre for shopping, dining and the arts, with stalls, restaurants and galleries throughout. Also a unique sight definitely worth a visit is the Congregation Mickve Israel, a Synagogue which dates back to 1829. The only gothic style synagogue in the US, the architecture and history provide a unique insight into the Jewish population which came to settle here in the city’s early days.

For a great day of fun for both young and old, jump in your hire car and head east of the city centre, along Islands Expressway, which will take you across the river to Oatland Island. Here you can visit the Oatland Island Wildlife Centre, a wildlife park with a focus on animals from the Americas. See wolves, bison, snakes, deer and giant cats, a great way to see the local wildlife.

Further east is another great place for the whole family to spend a day or two, Hilton Head Island. A popular getaway spot for Savannah locals as well as travellers from abroad, the island, and the town by the same name function as one great big seaside resort area. With great beaches, golf courses, and plenty of activities such as bushwalking and kayaking to be done, its easy to see why the island is so popular.
