Calculation of Rates: Rates are based on seasonal calendar days.
Minimum Age: Breezer, Nomad - 18 years (with full licence). Warrior, Wanderer, Quattro, Off-Roader 4WD - 21 years. No Young Drivers Surcharge is payable.
Maximum Age: No limit.
Licence Requirement: All drivers must have held a full, valid Australian or New Zealand licence for a minimum of 2 years. The drivers licence must be current and be valid for the whole duration of the rental. Should a foreign licence be in a language other than English, it must be accompanied by a current international driving permit issued in the same country as the drivers licence was issued. An accredited English translation will be accepted in lieu of an international driving permit.
Minimum Rental: Breezer - 3 days with the exception of one way hires. Nomad, Warrior, Wanderer, Quattro, Off-Roader 4WD - 5 days with the exception of one way hires. One Way Hires - Refer to the one way fee clause. Subject to change in peak periods i.e. Christmas. Between 15 Dec-05 Jan, minimum rental period is 7 days for all vehicles except the Quattro where the minimum hire is 10 days. During the Bathurst races, Quattro rentals from Sydney carry a minimum of 7 days. During the Philip Island races, Quattro rentals from Melbourne carry a minimum of 7 days.
Collection Time: Pick up time is anytime during office hours.
Return Time: Return time is at least 1 hour before depot closing time.
Branch Hours: Open 7 days a week (except Sydney Downtown and Christmas Day at all branches). Brisbane, Byron/Ballina, Sydney (excluding downtown), Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth: 01 September-30 April 7.30am-4pm. 01 May-31 August 10am-4pm. Sydney Downtown: 01 September-30 April Mon-Sat 10am-5.30pm, Sun 10am-3.30pm. 01 May-31 August Mon-Sat 10am-4.30pm, Sun Closed.
Alice Springs, Darwin and Cairns: 01 May-31 October 7.30am-4pm. 01 November-30 April 10am- 4pm.

First Aid Kit: A First Aid kit is supplied in every vehicle. If the seal is broken or the kit is not returned the kit becomes the property of the renter and an AUD31 + Tax fee is charged when the vehicle is returned.

Pre Purchase Gas Option (PGO): Standard rates - Breezer, Nomad, Warrior, Off-Roader 4WD: AUD18 + Tax /rental. Wanderer, Quattro: AUD38 + Tax /rental per gas bottle. Included in Inclusive rates. The gas bottle is supplied full and can be returned empty once the hire is complete. The gas bottle is used to operate the gas stove and to heat the hot water in vehicles with a hot water facility.

Transfers: Backpacker clients need to make their own way to and from the Backpacker Branch at their own expense.
Vehicle Age: Approx. 3-6 years. Vehicles cannot be requested by model, mileage or age, only by vehicle category.
Security Deposit: Cash - Not available. Credit Card - Required. Standard Rates - deposit debited AUD5,000/AUD3,500, AUD2,500/AUD1,500 or AUD500/AUD220, depending on the vehicle and the insurance cover the client has. Inclusive Rates - deposit imprint taken of AUD500/AUD220, depending on the vehicle type. Backpacker accept Visa & MasterCard only and will incur an additional 2% surcharge on any transaction.
Animals in Vehicle: No animals are permitted in our vehicles, excluding guide dogs.
Smoking in Vehicles: Smoking is not permitted in any of the vehicles.
Fuel: Client is advised to return the vehicle with a full tank of fuel, the same as collection.
Storage: Not available at the Backpacker depots.
Cleaning Fee: Indoor cleaning charges will apply if the vehicle is not returned clean.
GST: GST is applied to those items paid at time of collection.

Travel Restrictions:
- 2WD vehicles: Can only be driven on sealed/bitumen roads or well maintained access roads less than 12 kilometres to recognised campgrounds, and recognised roads on Kangaroo Island. Should a customer wish to travel on an unsealed that is greater than 12 kilometres in length to access a campground, special permission can be arranged pending road conditions, weather and distance.
- 4WD vehicles: Can only be driven on sealed /bitumen roads and recognised unsealed roads. 4WD vehicles may NOT travel to the following areas: Simpson Desert, Strzelecki Track, Gunbarrel Highway, the Old Gunbarrel Hwy, Cape York, the Bungle Bungles, Oodnadatta Track, Birdsville Track, Tanami Track, the Plenty Highway, the Burke Development Road from Chillagoe to Normanton and Savannah Way from Normanton to Borroloola, Fraser Island, Finke Road (between Alice Springs and Oodnadatta), Central Arnhem Road and Arnhem Land in general, Gibb River Road, Canning Stock Route, the Lost City in Litchfield Park, Boggy Hole (Finke Gorge National Park) and the Old South Road from Maryvale to Finke.
- Backpacker reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions, and the distance to nominated destinations in relation to the length of the hire period.
