As with many other Danish cities, Aarhus was built up around the harbour, so it's no surprise to find the city centre located here. Drive your hire car into the centre, and explore the area, which features many of the city's oldest buildings as well as some other great attractions.
One building you cannot miss is Aarhus Cathedral, the tallest and longest cathedral in Denmark. Dating back to the 12th century, and standing at 96 metres tall, the cathedral is definitely an impressive site.
Not far from here, you can visit an excellent cultural attraction, known as Den Gamle By, or The Old Town. This is an outdoor museum made up of over 70 historical buildings which were collected from around the country. The buildings date from the 16th to the 19th centuries, and show life in the area before modern times. Right next door you can also visit Aarhus Botanical Gardens.
For a unique view of the area, jump in your Aarhus car hire and head west of the city, stopping at Himmelbjerget, a large hill which is the 2nd highest point in the country. As Denmark is quite a flat country, the views from the top of the hill are quite impressive.
