Experience Alice Springs
Alice Springs is a relatively young town, with the site only discovered by explorers in the mid-19th century. Local Aboriginal people have lived in the area for over 50,000 years and have left their mark on the land in the form of carvings and paintings found around caves and on cliff faces. Rising from the red centre of Australia, Uluru (Ayers Rock) is one of the greatest natural wonders in the worls. Photographs featuring Uluru cannot prepare you for the physical impact of this massive icon. Everything around it immediately becomes tiny in comparison. Continue further along to find The Olgas – a group of giant rounded domes jutting up from the horizon which glow at sunrise and sunset.
To get up close and personal with local wildlife, drive to Alice Springs Desert Park, just 10 minutes away from town. Here you can see a wide variety of native animals, many of which blend into the desert – a rare sight to see! Back in town, there are plenty of things to keep visitors busy, with most focusing on the unique landscape and people of the area. At Todd Mall, near the town centre, explore the local stores and tourist attractions. Be sure to visit the Aboriginal Desert Art Gallery, home to many examples of local indigenous art and Ewaninga Rock Carvings Conservation Reserve, where you can see hundreds of rock carvings, some estimated as being up to 30,000 years old.
