Hilo Hilo

Historically a busy farming and fishing area, downtown Hilo slowly evolved into a commercial centre built around its crescent-shaped bay. In 1946 and 1960 the town was nearly swallowed by a tsunami, but locals remained positive and Hilo’s waterfront was rebuilt. Today it is a vibrant city, home to many museums, art galleries, unique shops and local favourites such as the Hilo Farmers Market. Drive 10 minutes from downtown to visit Hilo’s newest world-class attraction, the Imiloa Astronomy Center. It is located beneath three towering titanium cones that represent the three largest mountains on Hawaii Island. The centre features interactive exhibits, an IMAX-style movie presentation and a walk through native forest. Approximately 15 minutes drive west from downtown Hilo is the town of Keaukaha. This community of Hawaiian homes and churches has breathtaking scenery and protected ocean swimming. If you’re lucky you might even spot spinner dolphins and whales in the waters offshore.

The northeastern coast of Hawaii Island gets more rainfall, so it is where you will find many natural wonders including Waianuenue, also known as Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots in Wailuku River State Park. Visit the nation's only rainforest zoo, Panaewa Rainforest Zoo, to see a collection of exotic plants and animals, including a regal white Bengal tiger. For a taste of Hilo’s natural beauty discover the serene Liliuokalani Park & Gardens. These beautifully landscaped gardens are made up of arching red bridges over fishponds, rock gardens, pagodas, Japanese stone lanterns and a teahouse.

Hilo is also the gateway to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park located 45 minutes south. The park is the home of Kilauea volcano, one of the most active volcanoes on earth. Discover 240 kilometres of hiking trails through volcanic craters, deserts and rainforests as well as a museum, and a walk-in lava tube.
