Once you've seen the Gateshead Millennium Bridge take a drive in your car rental and visit the Bowes Railway, the world’s only preserved operating gauge rope-hauled railway. The Railway was first built in 1826 by George Stephenson and was primarily used for the transport of coal from Durham Pits to the boats on River Tyne. Today, Bowes Railway now operates as a museum for locals and visitors alike. Tours run during selected days of the week and give a great insight of the construction and operations of the railway, as well as a joy ride on a preserved locomotive.
