GPS, How Did We Get Around Without It?

Not too long ago, GPS was something few people knew about, let alone had access to. These days, technology is as widespread as mobile phones and laptop computers, with more and more people using it. So common is GPS use that it seems to be everywhere, and once you start using it, it’s almost hard to imagine life without it.

What is a GPS?

The GPS, or Global Positioning System, is a satellite-based navigation system and is essentially a way of working out coordinates and getting directions. The GPS units provided by DriveAway and our suppliers are a small touch screen device that can be attached to the windscreen or dash board of your hire vehicle.

Enter your desired location into the GPS unit and directions will be provided on the fastest route to get where you need to go.

How does it work?

It works by receiving signals from satellites that constantly orbit the earth. By measuring the time the signals from any satellites take to reach the GPS unit, it can then calculate your position and point you in the right direction.

Not only can your GPS unit provide you with information on which way to travel, it can also measure things like speed, estimated time of arrival and create a new route for you if you veer off course. With maps becoming more and more detailed, some units also have functions to help you find a local business or place of interest, such as a restaurant, hotel or museum.
