Following the winding NSW South Coast, the Grand Pacific Drive leads visitors on a beautiful journey covering Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and beyond.
Leaving Sydney and heading south along the Princess Highway, enter the grounds of the Royal National Park. Situated a short distance south of Sydney, pass by dramatic coastal lookouts and pristine stretches of sand or bushwalk through dense forest home to over 300 bird species. Further south thrill seekers will enjoy Bald Hill in Stanwell Park, soar above the gorgeous landscape in a hang glider or indulge in a picnic in the coastal parklands.
Driving south, the majestic Sea Cliff Bridge juts out over the ocean and hugs the coastline between Coalcliff and Clifton, a breathtaking piece of engineering. Situated north of Wollongong, the idyllic coastal suburb of Austinmer is surrounded by imposing mountains and sparkling seas. Take an ocean swim or enjoy a serve of fish and chips on the water’s edge. Follow the route through Thirroul and Bulli towards Wollongong, the state’s third largest city. Experience the lively city centre with great shopping, restaurants, cafes and art galleries or take in a meditation class at the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere, the Nan Tien Temple.
Leaving Wollongong behind, Shellharbour is a quaint beachside town boasting a relaxing landscape with award winning restaurants and the regions only marine aquatic reserve. Continuing inland, families will enjoy Jamberoo Action Park, a water theme park perfect for those summer road trips. Back towards the coast, Kiama is dotted with charming cafes or restaurants and the impressive Kiama Blowhole sprays seawater over the rocky surrounds, a thrill for the children. Following the route towards the end, Nowra is a historic city in the heart of Shoalhaven. Hanging Rock Lookout is 47 meters above the river and offers spectacular views of the Shoalhaven or the Fleet Air Arm Museum allows visitors to delve into the history of navy aviation. You can continue your drive further south towards Jervis Bay, Ulladulla and Batemans Bay or the nation’s capital Canberra is approximately 2 hour 45 minutes from Nowra. Alternatively return to Sydney in approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.
