Winding its way along the New South Wales coastline from Sydney to the Queensland border, the Legendary Pacific Coast is the perfect way to experience some of the state’s most popular, beautiful and iconic beachside destinations.
From Sydney, head north along the M1 Motorway, through the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park and the Brisbane Water National Park. Stop by one of Terrigal’s waterfront cafes for a coffee with a view or make your way to one of the area’s surf beaches to ride a few waves. Jump back in the car and drive north to The Entrance, a popular beachside destination and soak up scenic sea views or enjoy a serving of fresh fish and chips. Continue on to Newcastle and experience the city’s thriving arts scene and growing food culture. From Newcastle, journey on to Port Stephens, the main town of the Nelson Bay region, before settling in for the night.
After breakfast, join an expert led dolphin watching tour and then and travel north for two hours, reaching Port Macquarie. Once there, spend time exploring the area’s waterways, enjoying a beachside lunch or getting active with a stroll along part of the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk. From Port Macquarie, continue north for just over an hour to South West Rocks. Soak up the coastal town’s laid back atmosphere, laze on golden sands or spend time exploring the beautiful Hat Head National Park before resting up for the day ahead.
After enjoying a last few moments in South West Rocks, make your way north to Coffs Harbour. Visit the iconic Big Banana or leave the kids enchanted with the natural world at Dolphin Marine Magic or the Butterfly House. Travel an hour inland to reach Grafton, a regional city renowned for its spectacular jacaranda trees, and spend an afternoon at the city’s art gallery, the nearby Yuraygir National Park or simply wandering along historic streets. Before settling in for the night, make the trip to Yamba, a coastal town found just under an hour away.
After an early start, follow the Pacific Highway to Ballina and enjoy breakfast at one of the town’s popular cafes. Following breakfast, take some time to get active with water sports on the Richmond River or soak up the warm coastal sun at one of the town’s beaches. After spending time in Ballina, head back out on the open road to Byron Bay. Swim or surf in Byron Bay’s pristine waters, laze on golden sands or savour the views of the country’s most easterly point. From Byron Bay, travel to Duranbah and visit Tropical Fruit World, the world’s largest grower of tropical fruits to sample delectable fresh fruit. Jump back in the car and cross the Tweed River to reach Tweed Heads. Spend time exploring the area, continue your journey north into Queensland, or begin the trip back home.
