Starting at Gundagai, the Snowy Valleys Way meanders south to Tumut, passing through picture-perfect country scenery and tiny villages. Set within the foothills of Kosciuszko National Park, Tumut is a charming country town that offers fantastic views, regardless of the season. Experience the town’s natural beauty by following the Tumut River Walk or admiring the impressive stalactites and stalagmites of the nearby Yarrangobilly Caves during a guided tour. Make the most of the great outdoors by fishing, canoeing or kayaking on the Tumut River or get in touch with Tumut’s fascinating history by following the self guided heritage trail that winds through the town’s streets. If you find yourself in Tumut during autumn, be sure to visit one of the many events held in celebration of the Falling Leaf Festival. From Tumut, venture south for just over 30 kilometres to reach the town of Batlow.
While in Batlow, take time out to discover why the region has become so well regarded for its fine fresh produce. Purchase stone fruit, berries, pears, apples and other varieties direct from the farm gate, or head outdoors and fill a basket with flavoursome fruit yourself. Celebrate the town’s fresh local produce during May’s annual CiderFest celebration, or stop by during October’s Batlow Apple Blossom Festival. From Batlow, drive south for just over half an hour to reach Tumbarumba. Surrounded by lush fields, tall peaks and rugged forests, Tumbarumba is a small town that boasts plenty of character and more than enough open spaces to get active. Set out on a bushwalk, cast a fishing line or spend a few hours at local cellar doors sampling fine wines produced in the area. From Tumbarumba, the drive crosses the border into northern Victoria, winding its way west to towns such as Corryong, Beechworth and Wangaratta.
