Garden Route

South Africa is not widely known for being a safe and trouble-free self-drive destination. In fact, thousands of people do it each year because driving in South Africa is one of the most popular and safest ways to explore this magnificent country.

The southern coast of South Africa is home to the popular Garden Route. Cape Town is the perfect starting point on your road trip adventure! Take the cableway to the top of Table Mountain and enjoy stunning 360 degree views of the city and sea below. Visit the endangered African penguins at Boulders Beach, and if you’re brave enough, take a trip out to Seal Island and take a dive with some of the fiercest Great White Sharks of False Bay.

Your self-drive adventure finally starts when you head away from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town, through vineyards and orchards and stop at the gourmet capital of the Cape Winelands, Franschhoek. This charming town is every food and wine lovers dream, where award-winning restaurants and 300-year-old winemaking traditions can all be enjoyed between towering mountains and breathtaking scenery. After indulging for a few days, leave the Winelands behind and turn up the Garden Route. With many places to visit along the way, we’ve put together a few places that are a must-see.

About two hours north of George, or an hour north of Oudtshoorn (home of the Cango Caves), is Swartberg Pass. Take your time to drive through this beautiful nature reserve and feel small again as you take in the views of the surrounding mountains. Keep an eye out for the baboons!

Along the Western Cape in Knysna is a lookout with spectacular views of the lagoon, Leisure Isle and Knysna. You can even take a catamaran and indulge in oysters and champagne, the perfect way to end your day before staying the night.

Finish your drive through Plettenberg Bay and Jeffreys Bay, but not before making a pit stop to the Elephant Sanctuary in The Crags, and bring your once in a lifetime trip to an end in Port Elizabeth. For a bit of luxury, you can continue on your drive and stay at the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve for pristine wilderness, home to the Big 5 and rich in history. This is the perfect end to your self-drive itinerary.
