Live like a cowboy on the aptly named Cowboy Trail, located in the province of Alberta. This trip begins in Calgary, the Cultural Capital of Canada. If you time it right, you can jump right into the action at the Calgary Stampede, the world’s most prestigious rodeo.
Just 36km west of Calgary, stop for a stroll through the historical town of Cochrane, known for its old fashioned store fronts. The next stop is Bragg Creek, a well-known hamlet just 30 minutes away. If you’re looking for adventure, head a bit further into Kananaskis Country, where you’ll find options for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.
Continue south through the Turner Valley and artisan town of Black Diamond to browse the shops for locally made authentic western crafts.
Don’t miss the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site, just west of the main route. Established in 1882, and visited by the Sundance Kid and H.R.H. Prince Edward of Wales, Bar U Ranch offers visitors a horse-drawn wagon ride and other historic displays, paying tribute to Canada’s ranching history.
The final stop on the Cowboy Trail is the town of Cardston, known for its founders who ventured from Utah during one of North America’s last great wagon migrations. Cardston has a number of charming, historical attractions including the Card Pioneer Home, Courthouse Museum and Remington Carriage Museum, all of which display life as it was in the Old West.
