Make sure you have at least 6 days to venture around the 600km Golden Circle, which begins and ends in the town of Whitehorse, located in the north western province of Yukon. Named for the famous Klondike Gold Rush that consumed the region in the late 19th century, this route will make you feel as though you’ve travelled back in time. Make sure to have your passport ready, as you’ll venture into the state of Alaska, USA while traveling this historic passage.
From Whitehorse head south to Skagway, Alaska, a gold mining town that seems to have been frozen in time during its peak. Here, you can visit the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park, or experience the Wild West at the Mascot Saloon Exhibit. If you’re seeking something more active, Skagway has options for air, land and sea, offering everything from dogsledding to flightseeing to fishing.
The next stop is Haines, Alaska- a picturesque fishing village where you can partake in kayaking and mountain biking, or simply sit back and enjoy the scenery. Seafood lovers rejoice, Haines is famous for Dungeness and King crab, salmon, halibut and prawns, all freshly caught just minutes away from the restaurants in which they’re served. Haines is also one of North America’s most popular eagle viewing areas, particularly during the month of November.
Venturing north back into Canada, explore Kluane National Park and Reserve, a World Heritage Site at Haines Junction. It is recommended to spend two nights here in order to have a full day to enjoy the park’s exceptional scenery and range of activities, including horseback riding, canoeing, white water rafting and much more.
When you’re ready to return, head back to Whitehorse. If you’d like to spend time in this charming town, take advantage of the Takhini Hot Springs and Yukon Wildlife Preserve.
